Highland rider Williamson local favourite for senior elite category at UCI Mountain Bike World Cup
Highland interests will be represented at the forthcoming UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William on 4 and 5 June by British Cycling team member and top Inverness-based mountain biker Greg Williamson (aged 18).
Competing on the world stage in his first year as a senior, Greg opened his international season with a placing of 14th in the Men’s Elite category in the Maxxis Cup at Gouveia in Portugal in March.
Participating at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup as part of the senior British Cycling MTB team, Greg is honoured to be representing his country at World Cup level.
With many years experience of competing successfully internationally at junior level, Greg relishes competitions on home soil and the accompanying enthusiastic support.
Greg Williamson said: “I’m really looking forward to my first major event in Scotland as a senior. The atmosphere at the World Cup events is amazing and I know Fort William will be incredible. From here I’ll be going on to events in Europe and North America, so I’m aiming for a good result to build my points in the World Cup series.”
Roger Wilbraham at British Cycling said: “Due to the way World Cup Mountain Bike events are structured, 6 of the UK’s top up and coming young riders are given the opportunity to taste competition at this level. Due to Greg’s outstanding performance at national level over the past 12 months, British Cycling have awarded Greg the opportunity to compete against the World’s best.”
According to the organisers, the Downhill in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William next month “is a full-on, flat-out, no-compromise charge down the face of Aonach Mor, the 9th highest mountain in the UK”.
The event demands physical strength and quick reflexes, as well as excellent control throughout the 2.8km long course. A descent of 555m, together with big jumps and plenty of technical sections, makes this one of the longest and toughest courses on the circuit.
