Last call for entries for Baxters Loch Ness Marathon as 1 May deadline approaches

With the 1 May deadline for entries fast approaching, runners have less than a week remaining to submit their entry for a guaranteed place in this year’s Baxters Loch Ness Marathon.

The removal of the ballot system for the event, the third largest marathon in the UK, has proved popular with runners and has contributed to a fantastic 48% rise on entries on the same time last year. Early indications are that the 2009 event, which takes place on 4 October, will match last year’s record field of over 6000 Festival entrants.

And organisers were also celebrating this week with the announcement that the ICA Award for Sporting Event of the Year was awarded to the 2008 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running.

This year was the first time in the eight year history of the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon that there was no ballot for marathon places, with entrants able to secure guaranteed places on a first come, first served basis. After the 1 May deadline only charity, club and overseas runner places will be available for the marathon.

Event and race director, Malcolm Sutherland, said: “It is excellent to see the increased entry numbers as compared to this time last year. This is the first year that guaranteed entry for marathon runners has been offered in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and it has certainly contributed to the increased rate of entries for the event. The number of entrants travelling from outside the Highlands to Run Home for the Year of Homecoming is also higher than we might have expected at this point in the year.”

“There’s still a few days for anyone still thinking of participating in this year’s event - get your entry in before the 1 May deadline to guarantee you place in the largest participatory sporting event in the North of Scotland – and now, thanks to the ICA, an award winning event too!”

Malcolm added: “I’d also like to remind everyone that entries are open for all other events in the Festival until 14 September – the Baxters River Ness 10K, the Baxters River Ness 5K Fun Run and the Healthy Working Lives 10K Corporate Challenge. All races are proving popular this year, so I’d encourage anyone thinking of entering any category to get their entry in as soon as possible to be sure of a place.”
Entries for all other events – the Baxters River Ness 10K, the Baxters River Ness 5K Fun Run and the Healthy Working Lives 10K Corporate Challenge – in the 2009 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running are open until 14 September.
